Happy Veterans Day

Happy Veterans Day to all of the veterans and their families that have sacrificed so much for our freedom.  Especially to the 2nd Battalion 5th Marines Hotel Company that served in Vietnam from 1966-1967 with my father.  His company fought in the Que Son Valley in 1967, where there was the largest loss of American lives than at any other time or place during the Vietnam War.  Most were volunteers.  Most were 18, 19 and 20.  Heroes.

James Gandolfini's 2010 documentary "Wartorn:1861-2010", studies the effects of war on the American soldier from the Civil War through 2010.  "Civil War doctors called it hysteria, melancholia and insanity. During the First World War it was known as shell-shock. By World War II, it became combat fatigue. Today, it is clinically known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a crippling anxiety that results from exposure to life-threatening situations such as combat."

Did you know that roughly 2/3 of Vietnam War soldiers were volunteers?  Less than 30% of the US military were volunteers in World War II.  The Vietnam Soldier volunteered because they wanted to be heroes like their fathers.  Did you know that there is not an epidemic of drug and alcohol abuse specifically among Vietnam Veterans.  There is an epidemic of drug and alcohol abuse among the Vietnam Veteran's generation, currently over 4 million Baby Boomers suffer from alcohol and substance abuse.
